La Casa de Malta

Established in 1992, the Casa de Malta program is a key service project of the Cuban Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta, a Catholic lay order committed to serving the sick and the poor. Operating on the grounds of the San Juan Bosco Parish in Miami, La Casa de Malta continues the church’s long-standing tradition of aiding those in need, a mission that dates back to assisting Cuban refugees in the 1960s.

With a dedicated pro-bono staff, volunteers, and medical practitioners, La Casa de Malta provides essential aid two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) throughout the year (a reduced schedule is in effect during the summer). The program offers weekly breakfast and lunch, food baskets, skills training, health services, and faith formation, supporting over 100 low-income individuals, primarily immigrants residing in “Little Havana,” one of Miami’s poorest areas.

The program not only delivers vital services, but also fosters spiritual growth among both beneficiaries and volunteers, creating a community that shares in the joys and sorrows of daily life.

On Thursdays, our workshops include English-language skills on two levels; manual skills development, crafts, and the teaching of Christian values. We teach these skills so that individuals can use them for better integration in their everyday lives.

We offer a hot and healthy lunch that includes a serving of protein, one or two side dishes, salad, dessert and a drink. During a typical year, we deliver more than 2,000 breakfasts and lunches, and the same number of baskets of food products. The food baskets have included: beans, rice, sugar, oil and vinegar, marmalade, canned food, pasta, coffee, canned milk, bread, cookies, and frozen food. Also, we have provided items such as household goods, clothing, and cleaning products.

On Tuesday mornings, along with breakfast, a basic health service is offered via volunteer nurses from FIU University and pro-bono doctors providing recipients basic examinations such as general history, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, breathing, and glycemic tests. If a patient should be referred to a medical facility because of his/her health condition, he/she is then sent to Saint John Bosco Clinic, located a few miles away. We complement breakfast and health services with lectures about disease prevention, vaccines, and nutrition, in coordination with the Saint John Bosco Clinic and UF’s EFNEP program. Finally, we deliver a personal hygiene products bag to each participant.

Each session is manned by about 12-16 volunteers. A greater number of volunteers (adults and young students) participate in Special Events: Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas celebrations, when we organize a special day with meals, music and special gifts.

Casa de Malta is open every Thursday from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM and every other Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
